Players embark upon imaginary adventures with the fictitious character of their own design and choosing, one that they themselves invent. Throughout the course of their compelling journey, players must battle monsters in face-to-face combat, gather treasure, interact with other players in the realm, and furthermore, gain "experience points" which awards their character with greater powers and game-playing advantages as the game progresses. D&D was revolutionary for it\\\\\\\'s time, because it departed from traditional war-gamming methods by assigning each player to one specific character, rather than having each player act as commander of an entire legion or gaming-army.
At the very heart of this addictive fantasy strategy game lies the Dungeon Master- a referee-type character who acts as both a storyteller and the ultimate creator of the game\\\\\\\'s plot and setting. The Dungeon Master is responsible for monitoring, and likewise, moderating what each character in the game does. The game may only be completed over a succession of many meetings between the players and their Dungeon Master.
The game teaches each player how to create their own fictional character, how to properly equip him for all of the adventures and battles his travels may bring him, how to use his special, tailored character powers against his enemy rivals, how to interact with other players on their intergalactic battlefield, and even how to avoid bewitchment from the magical spells of their game-world opponents.
And the coolest thing about Dungeons and Dragons? The Dungeon Master and his players can actually work together to effect a few changes in the rules of the game-however they see fit to better enhance their tailor-made game-playing experience. |
