While it is impossible to say for sure just what a typical haunted castle will look like, there are many stories that have been which can certainly give one at least an idea of the goings-on in a typical structure of this type. Some have memorable names, such as the one that's known as the most haunted castle in all of Britain, Chillingham Castle. Lying in the county of Northumberland in northern England, it’s said that there’is a large number of restless ghosts wandering its halls, the most famous of which is the ‘Blue Boy,’ whose ghostly wails and screams usually can be heard somewhere around midnight.
The castle itself is a magnificently-maintained 12th-century stronghold, and it's been continuously owned by the family of the famous Earls Grey and their relations since that time. Maybe because the castle has been so well-maintained (even today it hosts weddings, tours and other events), the ghosts and restless souls who met their end -- in one way or another -- in the castle or its dungeons feel comfortable in maintaining their earthly anchor there, all while trying to scare visitors greatly, for sure.
The world-famous residence of the Queen of England (Elizabeth II) is also thought to be haunted. It is the largest inhabited castle in the world and a structure of one sort or another has stood on the spot it occupies for over 900 years. That's plenty of time for various ghosts and other restless wandering spirits to find an earthly anchor from which to roam about, tormenting the living. It is said that Henry VIII himself can be seen, striding through the hallways of the castle, bemoaning his fate.
A haunted castle tour or visit can be a great way to get one into the spirit of things, so to speak. There are large numbers of such castles spread throughout the United Kingdom, to name just one place where a great example of a haunted castle can be found. No doubt, some souls were imprisoned there because of the wayward spells or incantations inadvertently cast by some warlock or wizard of the medieval age.
